Top 10 Reasons NOT to Pick a Contractor
- Look closely at their advertisement. Are they local, or is there a P.O. Box from out of town listed? A local company may be more responsive if you are having issues with your job.
- Was your price based on square footage alone? These types of bids are only a guess and do not reflect a true price of work. If you have a big basement, with many rooms instead of several large open spaces, your square foot price might be the same. In actuality a basement with more rooms than open spaces will require more drywall, trim work, etc and the true price would likely be presented to you unexpectedly before the job was finished.
- Would you rather have a handyman specializing in small jobs finish your basement or a company that specializes in finished basements?
- Did the contractor providing the estimate ask you how you want to use your basement? Did he or she listen when you told them?
- Did the contractor providing the estimate show up on time? If not, do you think the contractor would show up on time if you hired them?
- Did the contractor wanting your business return your calls promptly?
- Is your estimate significantly lower than other estimates you received? It might be possible that the estimate is a low number just to gain your business, and won’t reflect what you are actually charged when work begins.
